I was thinking of tunes the band ditched in later years ( i think there are a few threads on this as well) Then I got to thinking that the last few years I got very few, if any sugaree's when I saw the band. Bucket>sugaree and JS>sugaree were staples from the 80's and a sugaree in the middle of the first set in the 70's always worked. I looked on the setlist program and the band only did 6 in 1994 and 4 in 1995. 1993 didn't have that many either. Very surprised they bailed on this tune and even more surprised I didn't pick up on it sooner.

Jerry even bailed on Sugaree with JGB playing it only twice in 85 and 86 then once in 87, for the last time.

Maybe it's because a staple of the song was jerry's leads inbetween each verse.. and he couldn't or didn't want to work with that? nah.. I don't think it'd hardly be that. What is interesting though, is how bob goes from playing kinda loose rhythms that slowly turn into him playing leady rhythms, and then in the 90's, full out lead!

Also, personally speaking of course, I think this tune suffered from garcia's "acoustic" sound from those new guitars. Didn't have the punch as some of the other versions had.

The one that always puzzled me was Passenger. i never could fogure out why it was dropped after the New years run in '81. To me it was one of the great GD Rockers, with Phil dropping bombs throughout.

Passenger is a great example of that! That was a great tune. Alabama Getaway too. I think they broke it back out a few times in 94 or 95.

Yeah, they played Alabama a few times in '95. I caught the one in Atlanta, which wasn't bad (if a bit slow). Maybe they just felt it was more of an eighties tune.

Plus, with the Garcia band playing Sugaree everynight maybe the old song just lost some of its shine. Seemed to peak in and around those monster 1983 versions.

I wonder that about Alabama Getaway. Why'd they drop that? (Not that it's as good as Sugaree, but it's still a good rocker.)
